The installation of Energy Monitoring Equipment is becoming increasingly popular and cost effective.
Most of our clients come to us in the pursuit of saving money via saving energy by installing one or more modern renewable energy technologies. Most noteworthy of these technologies are Solar PV, Biomass and Heat Pumps.
We also produce Energy Performance Certificates (EPC’s) which can be used as a guide as to where to save energy and money. EPC’s recommend installing other measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation, double and triple glazing and energy saving light bulbs.
The simplest and cheapest way to save money and energy though is the implementation of behavioral change by the buildings occupants. The measures when discussed are often ‘common knowledge’ but not ‘common practice’. Most clients realise that if they could see the actual cost of their energy use they could make changes that reduce their bills.
To help our clients understand where their money is going we often suggest the installation of energy monitoring equipment. This technology includes items such as that from Measure My Energy and Elios4You.
Equipment uses clamps and pulse meters installed into the ring main giving a simple overview or more detail. The details can come down to individual sockets to show exactly where and when energy is being used.
Therefore, through behavior change, by adding timers to sockets and by changing lights to PIR (Passive Infrared) for instance you can then reduce bills in the long and short term.
Elios4You tablet and software
Energy monitoring equipment can be installed permanently and in some cases be rented for a period of months or years. We can then work with you to highlight where your energy and cash are going. We then make a number of suggestions to reduce bills. Alerts for energy spikes (which includes water use) can also be programmed into the software. This consequently has the added benefit of highlighting leaks and other issues. In one example with a commercial user an energy spike caused by thieves set of an alert which helped catch them in the act!
The equipment and software can also be remotely accessed and controlled via your tablet or smart phone. This allows you to not only monitor from another location but also turn equipment on and off from your device wherever you are. These units are often connected to a ‘Smart Stat’ which can be turned up and down or on and off from your mobile device. There are many smart stats available including Nest and Climote, all of which we install.
We also install monitoring equipment for Solar PV systems from around £200 which aid self-consumption.
Other energy saving equipment includes ‘self-consumption units’ such as The Immersun which diverts solar PV generated electricity to your immersion heater providing cheap hot water from your solar system. This unit can be installed in 2 hours to homes with Solar PV and a hot water tank (with immersion heater). An Immersun will typically pay for itself typically in under 6 years, often less. Most PV clients of ours install this when their solar panels are installed but it is easily retrofitted. If you have Solar PV installed then call us for a quote.
